When a child is diagnosed with a visual condition or starts treatment such as eye patcjing, glasses, vision therapy, or regular eye appointments, adults often focus on questions like:

  • What is the diagnosis?

  • What is the treatment?

  • How long will it take to give results?

  • How to make it easier for kids to cooperate?

All important questions. But there is another one that matters just as much:

  • How does the child feel about all of this?

Because for many children, visual therapy is not just some routine. It can feel confusing, frustrating, lonely. Some children become resistant. Some feel embarrassed. Some quietly worry that they will become "different".

This is where Bibliotherapy can be really helpful and a powerful tool

What is Bibliotherapy?

Bibliotherapy is the practice of using specific books and storytelling to support emotional well-being. It’s based on a simple but powerful idea: children can better understand their own experiences when they see them reflected in stories.

Through characters, narratives, and gentle guidance, books can help children:

  • Recognise and process difficult emotions like fear, frustration, or confusion

  • Feel less alone in their experiences

  • Build resilience and coping skills

  • Understand what is happening to them

  • Become more open to treatment and support

For kids, especially younger ones, it’s often easier to talk about a character’s struggles than their own. That connection creates a bridge—one that helps them open up, reflect, and heal.

Why bibliotherapy matters for children with visual needs

Children facing visual problems like amblyopia, binocular vision difficulties or eye movement problems or undergoing eye treatments often deal with more than just the physical aspect. They face challenges that adults can easily underestimate. To us it may feel like "just a patch" or "just some exercises". But to them it can actually feel like:

  • Anxiety about doctor visits or procedures

  • Frustration with exercises or wearing glasses/patches

  • Self-consciousness and lack of self-esteem around peers

  • Confusion about what’s happening to their eyes

  • Fear of being left out.

These feelings are real and they deserve space and recognition.

Without the right support, these feelings can build up and make the treatment process even harder.

Bibliotherapy helps because it turns treatment from something that is simply done to a child into something they can begin to understand, relate to and emotionally accept. Sometimes the first step to successfully heal a diagnosis is to emotionally accept it and then start the treatment. The child will be more willing to go through the process of treatment once it understands all aspects of it and has the insurance that its feelings are heard and understood.

A good therapeutic story can help a child see that:

  • they are not alone

  • their struggle is valid

  • treatment has meaning

  • courage does not mean "not being scared" or "not moaning about it"

  • process can happen one step at a time

Very often children accept problems from real life much more easier when they are explained through a storybook. Once they see it is not simply what the doctor says, but also understand that other kids go through that as well.

How “My Magic Eyes” Books Help

This is where My Magic Eyes books truly shine. They are designed not only to support visual development but also to guide children emotionally through their journey.

1. Turning Treatment Into an Adventure

Instead of seeing eye exercises or routines as boring or stressful, children are invited into a magical world. The activities become part of a story—something exciting rather than something they have to do. Finn's journey becomes their journey.

2. Creating Emotional Connection

Children see characters who may be experiencing similar challenges. This helps normalize their feelings and reassures them that what they’re going through is okay. My idea was not only to write a story, but to give them another child to look up to. Someone with the same struggles, the same fears. But someone who overcomes them. To hear out loud that he has the same emotional battles as they have, helps them better accept them and be able to explain it to their family and friends.

3. Encouraging Consistency Through Engagement

Vision therapy often requires repetition and consistency. When exercises are embedded in a story, children are far more likely to stay engaged and motivated. Finn's journey is specifically designed to go through all the process from diagnosis to wearing glasses, to wearing an eye patch, to starting exercises, to then finally being able to see the difference and how in the end he succeeds into his own treatment plan.

4. Reducing Anxiety

Stories provide a safe space where children can explore their fears indirectly. A magical, friendly narrative helps soften the stress associated with treatment routines.

5. Supporting Parent-Child Bonding

Reading together creates moments of connection. Parents can use the stories as a gentle way to talk about their child’s experience, answer questions, and offer reassurance. And children can better explain what they feel, once they know it is not just them who feel that way. They are encouraged to share and to be curious about it by discussing Finn's journey

In the end...Healing is and growth don’t happen through treatment alone—they happen through understanding, connection, and emotional support. Bibliotherapy reminds us that stories can be powerful companions in that process.

And with My Magic Eyes, children aren’t just working on their vision—they’re discovering confidence, courage, and a little bit of magic along the way.
